On a kayak trip in Costa Rica, from Samara to Chora Island, the local guide (whose family owns and runs a coffee plantation near Samara) gave background on Chora Island. He said that not much lives there other than hermit crabs and iguanas. Occasionally, he had seen a monkey and that it is believed that they swim there from Samara beach.
Everyone was surprised to hear that monkeys are good swimmers.
No sooner had he spoken about this than another kayak guide signaled that there was a monkey in the ocean off the shore of the island. Everyone stopped their snorkeling and exploring to watch this monkey swim the remaining distance to shore.
The monkey moved arms and legs and came up for breath intermittently. Soon s/he came close enough to start walking onto the beach and towards all of the big trees on the island, where I am sure s/he would climb and swing from branch to branch.
The locals said this was the first time they had actually seen a monkey swimming to Chora Island
